It looks like former President Donald Trump is ready to make a comeback on social media.
The former president is launching a brand-new social media app called Truth Social. The Trump team already has several hundred people testing it in a beta version. The app itself looks similar to Twitter. In October, President Trump said his goal was to create a rival for the Big Tech companies like Facebook and Twitter, which had banned him after the January 6th Capitol breach. Former Texas GOP Chair Steve Munisteri says if there's anyone who could be successful in launching a new platform, it's Donald Trump.
“Because the president has such a big base and email list and lists from the RNC and lists from his campaigns he’ll be able to directly market this to people who I think will want this service,” Munisteri said.
He adds Trump has always been a trendsetter when it comes to social media.
“He changed the dynamic of how the press interacted with the president. So, previously presidents would have press conferences or [the press would] wait for statements,” Munisteri explained. “But during the Trump administration, all the president would have to do is put out a tweet to get immediate coverage.”
If Trump runs for office again in 2024, many of his supporters believe Truth Social will likely be his platform of choice.
