NBC News projects that Joe Mitchell will win the Republican primary for Iowa's 2nd Congressional District. The former state representative defeated State Senator Charlie McClintock. Mitchell, who was endorsed by President Donald Trump, will face Democrat Lindsay James in the general election this November.

Lindsay James, a state representative, emerged victorious in the Democratic primary, defeating Clint Twedt-Ball and Kathy Dolter. James, who has served in the Iowa House of Representatives since 2023, focuses her campaign on affordability, healthcare access, and immigration reform. She criticized the 'One Big Beautiful Bill' for risking coverage for 27,000 people in the district.

Joe Mitchell, a homebuilder and former regional director for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, emphasizes economic issues, manufacturing, and trade jobs. He supports year-round sales of E15 gasoline and stronger border security. Mitchell's campaign has raised over $1 million in individual contributions, making him the fundraising leader in the Republican race.

The primaries were highly contested, as both parties aim to address voter concerns over the economy, healthcare costs, and political division. The seat became open after Republican incumbent Ashley Hinson decided to run for the U.S. Senate.

The general election will take place on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, with Mitchell and James vying for the seat in Iowa's 2nd Congressional District, which covers 22 counties in northeast Iowa, including Cedar Rapids, Waterloo, and Dubuque.
