Public Safety is the Top Topic for U.S. Mayors

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner is attending the U.S. Conference of Mayors 91st Annual Meeting, where the nation’s mayors are learning how much they have in common.

“Public safety is the number one issue of mayors across the country regardless of how big your city is,” Turner tells KTRH News in a Sunday morning call. “This morning we had a session dealing with the number of mass shootings.” He says there have been many conversations about

Homelessness is also a top priority among U.S. mayors, Turner says. The congressionally passed bipartisan infrastructure bill is garnering high praise, saying mayors can now tackle projects that have been sitting on the shelves for years. The issue of pre-emption, Turner says, is also something many mayors are contending with.

Turner terms out at the end of the year, and said his future will involve continuing serving, though not as an elected official. “Service is something we call can render regardless of our title.”

Turner stresses that the meeting of mayors is entirely bipartisan, and the solutions they are seeking are not politically directed.
