Yesterday afternoon, (5-7-2023) Brownsville Police successfully identified 34 year old George Alvarez of plowing his Range Rover into a crowd at a bus stop outside Brownsville's Ozanam Center, a place that serves immigrants and the homeless. Alvarez is no stranger to Brownsville police (see photo). Previous charges include nine assault charges against family members, public servants and elderly and disabled people; as well as charges for drunk driving, marijuana possession, burglary and evading arrest.
Brownsville Police Chief Felix Sauceda saying seconds after the crime, Alvarez was physically detained by civilian witnesses, holding onto him until the police arrived. Alvarez is now in police custody charged with and arraigned on 8 counts of manslaughter and 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is not cooperating with officials and is being held on $3.6 million bail.
Officials are now stating that the 8 deceased people were immigrants. The police record shows that Alvarez ran a red light and the vehicle flipped over on its side when it hit the crowd of people. Chief Sauceda saying their next step is to discover if the act was/was not intentional.
