Your next airline cancellation or delay could be worth money in your pocket

A new passenger-friendly proposal is being floated in front of the Department of Transportation. The Department is reviewing a proposal that gives refunds to passengers for certain delayed or canceled flights. Aviation Expert Joshua Verde says airlines are watching this closely. "Airlines will argue that the delays are out of their control - like the weather, staff shortages at airports and air traffic control delays. But - many are under their control, like their own staffing issues and maintenance delays." He says airlines are considering their options asking themselves: "What do we have to do to minimize what we're going to have to refund all or a portion of a fare? Maybe we could change flight schedules and over-bookings?"

If it passes, certain passengers will receive refunds/rewards on delayed and canceled flights. Verde says the airlines are contemplating what this could mean to both their business practices and their bottom lines. He also explains that they won't make getting a refund simple, either. "It's likely going to be a little tricky. It won't be like just clicking a button on your phone. There will probably be a process involved to request the refund or whatever compensation. It could be lengthy."

If the new rule passes, there could be fewer overbooked and understaffed flights in your future.

...or it could not pass at all.
