Hey Hey, There is Only One Monkee Left

This weekend flowers continue to be laid upon The Monkees' Hollywood Walk of Fame star in honor of Michael Nesmith.

Houston-born Monkees singer and guitarist Michael Nesmith died Friday.

His family tells Rolling Stone magazine the 78-year-old passed away from natural causes in the morning.

Nesmith was born in Houston, but grew up in Dallas before joining the Air Force and graduating from San Antonio College.

He taught himself guitar and had moved to Los Angeles when he drove his motorcycle to an audition for a TV show about a rock band, keeping his hair down with a wool hat. The producers remembered him as the hat guy, and he got the part, the hat becoming something of a trademark.

He became part of Monkees in 1965.

Nesmith also took part in some of the Monkees reunions over the years, but not as often as the band's other members.

Davy Jones died of a heart attack after riding his horse in 2012. Peter Tork died of cancer in 2019. Micky Dolenz is the only surviving member of the group.
