Flood risk grows Houston area as Tropical Storm Nicholas nears

Tropical Storm Nicholas strengthened this morning according to the 4 a.m. National Hurricane Center advisory, but it is moving faster.

Traveling north-northwest at near 14 mph, it's expected to turn northward later today and north-northeastward on Tuesday. Maximum sustained winds remain near 60 mph with higher gusts.

The National Hurricane Center also says the movement of the storm is quicker than earlier forecast. A significant stall over the Houston region is now not expected, but this is still a dangerous storm with potential flooding as 8-16 inches of rain are possible with a maximum of 20. The storm should be over the Louisiana-Mississippi border by Wednesday afternoon.
