Summer is always a critical time for the nation’s blood supply, but this year is especially tough as normalcy returns following the past year.
Porfirio Villarreal is with the City of Houston Health Department and says there are special needs this summer. “More hospitals are returning to non-essential surgeries, more people are undergoing organ transplants, pregnant women with complications sometimes need blood, so the demand is greater.”
Best place to start is the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. Click on "donations" and find a convenient time and location for your schedule.
You can save up to three lives with your one act of generosity.
“There are more vehicle accidents, and more general accidents. In fact, one single car accident can cause a single victim to need as much as 100 units of blood,” adds Villarreal.
