Houston Homicide Rate is Soaring

Houston's homicide rate is soaring.

There were more than 400 homicides in Houston last year, and so far in the first half of this year, there have been about 225.

That works out to a 42-percent increase. In all of 2014, there were 213 murders in Houston. Mayor Sylvester Turner says there's too much gun violence in the city.

HPD Chief Troy Finner says six more homicide detectives will be hired by next Thursday.

At the current rate, Houston may have 575 homicides by the end of the year.
