House Committee Passes Trans Athlete Bill

The Texas legislature has until May 31st to wrap up this year's business.

A Texas House committee is passing a bill requiring transgender athletes play on teams matching their birth sex, just days after rejecting it.

The Texas House Committee on Public Education voted 8-5 on the bill this morning. Houston Democratic Representative Harold Dutton Jr., who chairs the committee, wouldn't comment on why the Senate bill was brought back, but complained about the Texas House sending a bill he authored back to committee.

That bill would have allowed the state to take over Houston ISD.

The NCAA has threatened to pull sports championships from Texas if the trans bill becomes law.
