Pair of Carnival cruise ships return to Galveston

Two Carnival cruise ships have returned to the Port of Galveston.

The pair docked Sunday after more than a year away, offering hope for an industry that has taken a huge pandemic hit.

The Carnival Breeze and Carnival Vista arrived at the port at around noon. and the public was invited to come check them out from the dock.

Many local businesses rely on cruises from the Port of Galveston, the fourth most-popular cruise port in North America

While ships still aren't allowed to sail from the U.S. with passengers, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued guidance on how voyages might resume. Requirements include daily reporting of COVID-19 cases, routine testing for crew members, and a plan for vaccinating crews and port workers.

Trial voyages with volunteers on board could be next, according to the CDC.

The Breeze and Vista will undergo maintenance while they wait in port.
