Funeral Thursday for Fort Bend Deputy Constable Killed by Friendly Fire

Friends, family and colleagues are saying goodbye Thursday to a Fort Bend County Deputy Constable accidentally shot and killed by a fellow officer.

The private funeral for Fort Bend Deputy Constable Caleb Rule is set in Needville. Rule was shot in the chest Friday by a Sheriff's deputy after he mistook the 37-year-old for an intruder while they were searching a home. Precinct 4 Chief Deputy John Hermann says they were blessed to have an experienced patrol officer who mentored others.

“We ask that we get some respect for the family in this case, who’s lost a father, and a husband, and a son. Give the family time to grief on this. It’s not really a time to protest this deputy, who gave his life in service to our community here in Fort Bend,” Hermann said.

Deputy Rule was a married father of four. Hermann says their office often took solace when he was patrolling the streets at night.
