Data: Spring breakers may have spread COVID-19 across US

Cellphone location data has demonstrated the dangers posed by spring breakers crowding open beaches during the coronavirus pandemic.

The mapping company Tectonix used phone-location data collected by the tracking company X-Mode to create a video showing the travels of thousands of individuals leaving a single Fort Lauderdale beach. While not all of the travelers had coronavirus, many may have. The map shows them leaving the seashore to spread out all over the eastern half of the country, potentially spreading COVID-19.

This is just one beach of many in the country where spring breakers gathered.

The companies have also tracked people fleeing the outbreak in New York City. Those individuals traveled even further, according to the data.

The White House is now saying upwards of 200,000 people may end up losing their lives as a result of the widely spreading virus.
