Are the new Texans keeping the state 'red?'

For a long time, Texas has had people moving from liberal states to escape high taxes. But there might be a downside to that.

Jared Woodfill with the Conservative Republicans of Texas says the new Texans come here for a good reason.

"We don't have a personal income tax. Our regulatory burden is light," Woodfill stated.

Woodfill says there is a question that we aren't asking about these new Texans. It's a question we probably should be asking.

"It's where they stand on social issues; that's still to be determined," Woodfill said.

Brian W. Smith at St. Edwards University says because of that, the political complexion of Texas is changing.

"That's one of the reasons that even though people are fleeing blue states, we are seeing the states that they are moving to are becoming a little more purple," Smith explained, adding that some of the people coming here could unwittingly turn Texas blue.
