In Houston, blood quantities of all types are down mostly due to, among other reasons, the slow donation rate during the holidays. There is an urgent call for blood donations at M D Anderson Cancer Center - especially for Type O Positive. Dr. Fernando Martinez says Type "O" is needed for a couple of reasons. "As you know, 'O' is the universal donor. And not only at MD Anderson, it seems we are short of Type 'O' in many other Houston hospitals. We have a lot of patients who are stem cell recipients. And in these cases, the only blood type we can use with these patients is 'O'."
Patients at MDA use over 200,000 blood components every year and they need your help now - no matter what your blood type. Often the bone marrow in cancer patients shuts down so the need for blood is constant.
