An Alabama sheriff is dead after being shot Saturday night.Officials say Lowndes County Sheriff John Williams was killed after responding to a call at a convenience store in Hayneville, about ten miles southwest of Montgomery.
The suspect accused of killing Williams turned himself in.Officials say after a three-hour manhunt, the 18-year-old suspected shooter returned to the scene of the crime and surrendered.
Williams is the fifth Alabama law enforcement officer this year to be killed in the line of duty.He leaves behind a wife and children.
Alabama Governor Kay Ivey said in a statement that Williams dedicated his life to keeping others safe, first in the Marine Corps and then in law enforcement.
Williams ran for sheriff in 2010 and has held the position since then.
