HPD announces arrest in viral reckless driving case

The driver who almost hit a 5-year old girl returning from a day of school last month is now in custody.

HPD Chief Art Acevedo announced today that 18-year old Julio Correas was arrested yesterday without incident, and has been co-operating with police.

"The driver made the conscious decision to disregard the flashing lights and the stop sign when this little girl was being delivered to her mom," Acevedo explained.

Corrreas is accused of ignoring the stop sign put out by the school bus as it dropped off Melina Kirk-Taylor on the afternoon of August 28th. Her mother recorded the video that has since gone viral, which you can see below. Acevedo said the young girl saved her own life after hearing her mother scream for the car to stop.

"Thank God that little girl was able to save her own life," Acevedo said.
