Crash sends 18-wheeler flying off East Freeway

UPDATE: It does not appear that the truck can safely be moved today. The submerged truck will remain in place overnight and a private vendor will join the effort tomorrow. @HCSOTexas will provide security of the site overnight.

An early morning, two-vehicle crash led to an 18-wheeler flying off a bridge in east Harris County, and the driver, who has not been found, is feared to have lost his life.

Deputies said the accident took place about 3:45 this morning on the East Freeway at the San Jacinto River.

Few details have been made public, but preliminary reports show the truck driver swerved to avoid something on the freeway causing the truck to fly off the bridge and land below, authorities said.

According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzales, the truck is submerged and a search is underway for the driver.
