Working into Your 70s ?!?

There are more elderly people actively working in the U.S. than ever before. In fact, one in 5 Americans with a Bachelor’s Degree are now working into their 70s! One reason is that we're living longer. Shondra Wygal, Associate State Director of Outreach and Advocacy for AARP says many people want to work that long. “Reasons range from needing money to wanting to stay mentally, physically and socially active, to just wanting something to do during the run of the week.”

She says their research shows lots of companies find older workers more dependable than those of other generations. Quitting a career can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness - especially for men. Many who hadn't planned to live so long need the income. Wygall says their work choices vary. “Our research has found that older workers are re-entering the work force from anywhere from doing the work they previously to doing hands-on service type work.”
