The Benefits of Complaining at Work

The Office - Season 9

Pissing and moaning at work might not be the best choice for career longevity, but the Motley Fool suggests it could be advantageous to acceptance by co-workers.

After all, what do office workers enjoy more than a good gripe-fest?

“It absolutely is a bonding thing. The question is whether it’s good for longevity or the company,” says Dr. Daren Martin, The Culture Architect, a consultant of Fortune 500 companies.

Well, yes, there’s that.

The Motley Fool suggests joining into the office culture of complaints can be a way to break the ice with new co-workers. It’s usually kind of neutral territory where most people can find a comfort zone. And when someone complains around you, it can be an invitation to engage in light-hearted banter.

“I do think when somebody’s complaining the worst thing you can do is respond, ’Oh everything is beautiful. I love my job.’ It is true that misery loves company,” Says Dr. Martin.

Unless you’re the boss.
