Prop B Layoffs Issued Today In Houston

(Houston, TX) -- Forty-seven Houston city employees from different departments will be receiving layoff notices today. Mayor Sylvester Turner is blaming the bad news on Proposition B, the voter-approved measure to provide firefighters the same pay as police officers of the same rank.

Turner calls the measure a budget-buster that will also result in the layoffs of 67 Fire Department cadets. Their termination date is June 7th, so it's possible something can be worked out. The Houston firefighters' union is accusing Turner of "playing politics."
