Benzene Detected At Shell Refinery In Deer Park

(Deer Park, TX) -- A shelter-in-place order is no longer in effect at a refinery near Houston where benzene was discovered. Shell Deer Park officials say low levels of the chemical are at certain sections of the plant. A spokesperson says the levels are above company standards, but are actually below OSHA standard limits.

No word on what caused the leak. The Shell facility is near the Intercontinental Terminals chemical plant that caught fire on Sunday. Crews were able to put out the flames early Wednesday morning, though hot spots continue to flare up.
