State Lawmaker Proposes Eliminating STAAR Tests

(Austin, TX)  --  The Texas legislature will be asked to consider a bill to eliminate the STAAR test.  Representative Brooks Landgraf of Odessa filed House Bill 736 last week to do away with the test "as a criterion for promotion or graduation," or for determining accountability.

Landgraf says the STAAR test is part of the state education system's "teach-to-the-test" mentality.  He says doing away with the test will be a step toward restoring education techniques that prepare young Texans for college, jobs, or military service after graduation from high school.
