How much time do we look at screens?

Take a look around you today. It’s a good bet that most of the people you see have their heads buried in some sort of screen.

New numbers show we spend half of the time we are awake looking at screens; six hours and 43 minutes to be exact. It's not just your phone, either. It's your computer at work, your iPad, or TV. Tech addiction expert Bob Kittel says the numbers are astounding.

“It is amazing, and it wouldn’t be a big deal except that it’s creating psychological and physiological problems,” Kittel said.

Some of this screen time, like at work, you can't help. But there are ways to manage this.

“Set a goal to only check your goal every 15 minutes, then every 30 minutes and then every 45 minutes. Tell your friends you are not going to be waiting for the phone to go off,” Kittel explained.

The research shows that if you add all of these hours up, if you reach the average life expectancy of 78 years, you might spend the equivalent of 22 years just looking at a screen.
