5G is here, sort of

Both AT&T and Verizon offer 5G wireless service in Houston, but it's only in select areas for now and you can't use it on your current phone.

Jeannine Braggs with Verizon in Texas says service in Houston is limited.

"Right now most of our services are only available within the Loop; primarily in the Heights, University area, Midtown."

Braggs says Verizon will offer Android phones that'll work with 5G by this spring.

"We're looking forward to when we're able to not just sell the phone but when we're able to have our first customers on the mobile 5G network."

Braggs says 5G can replace any wired broadband connection. Existing Verizon customers can get 5G installed, with all of the equipment needed, for 50 bucks a month.

Braggs says those who can get it are reporting high speeds.

"Our customers have been consistently reporting speeds close to one gig and the product is designed for people who have a lot of home connections because increasingly we are seeing more and more connected devices in our homes."

Braggs says non-Verizon customers pay $70 a month.
