The Houston Cougars will square off against the Black Knights of Army in the Armed Forces Bowl today in Fort Worth.
The Coogs finished the regular season 8-4 under second year head coach Major Applewhite. The team lost Applewhite’s first game as head coach – the 2016 Las Vegas Bowl – and they’re looking for some postseason redemption.
They’re facing a tough challenge; Army is 10-2. They’re on an eight-game winning streak and are looking for the first 11-win season in their history. They have the nation’s second-best running game (296 ypg) and UH may struggle without the services of defensive star Ed Oliver, who is preparing for the 2019 NFL draft. The Cougars are 98th among FBS teams in rushing defense.
Houston quarterback D’Eriq King is also sidelined with an injury so Clayton Tune will lead the nation’s fourth-best scoring offense (46.4 ppg).
The Cougars’ senior class has amassed 37 wins; they need on victory to match the Class of 2016 for the most wins in school history.
Coverage starts at 1:30pm on KPRC AM 950.
