A drug bust in east Houston ends with two dead and 7 in custody. The DEA, HPD Narcotics, federal agents and SWAT officers conducted an undercover drug bust operation.
It was around 10:30 Wednesday night when 9 men showed up with guns displayed at a known drug and narcotics operation at a warehouse near Harrisburg Boulevard and 77th Street.
Officers identified themselves and a couple the men ran. One shot at officers. SWAT fired back, killing the shooter.
Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said a man being taken into custody began complaining about shortness of breath, went into full cardiac arrest. EMS attempted CPR, but he died at the hospital.
Acevedo told our TV partner KPRC Channel 2:
“Anytime there’s a loss of life, it’s tragic, but when you shoot at police officers who are in full uniform, you know you are shooting a police officer or officers unfortunately for that suspect they have to return fire to protect themselves and others. That’s what they did in this case and tragically that suspect lost his life.”
The other seven men surrendered and are expected to face charges.
The SWAT officer who shot and killed the man on scene is now on administrative leave.
