Early Voting to Fill Vacant Texas Senate Seat

Early voting starts Monday in a special election to fill Congresswoman-elect Sylvia Garcia's Texas Senate seat.

Several early voting locations will be open over the next two weeks, but Harris County Clerk Stan Stanart says it only affects those living in the Democrat's senate district.

“That's Senate District 6, and there's actually 330,000 registered voters who are eligible to vote in this election,” he says.  “So, not everybody in Harris County but a good piece of it.”

Garcia resigned here state Senate seat once elected to Congress to replace Rep. Gene Green, D-Houston.  The field to fill her seat includes Houston state Reps. Carol Alvarado and Ana Hernandez, along with Republican Martha Fierro and Democrat Mia Mundy.

“There's a good chance there might be a runoff, so the runoff would then be in January, after that if we have one of those two state reps win then we'll have a special election after that,” says Stanart.  “So this thing can drag out as four total elections.”

Stanart urges voters to check the Clerk's office website to find out information on early voting locations. Election Day is Tuesday, December 11.
