USA Gymnastics may soon no longer hold status as a national governing body in the United States Olympic Committee. USOC CEO Sarah Hirshland announced the plan to revoke the organization's status yesterday.
This would mean it would no longer handle the sport for the national and international Olympics, including training teams and setting policies and rules. In an open letter, Hirshland told the gymnasts that they "deserve better." The decision follows several controversies in the USAG involving the mishandling and avoidance of sexual assault and harassment.
A hearing will be held before a board vote to determine if the status will be completely stripped.
