Houston Holiday Hiring is Challenging This Year

Unemployment hasn’t been this low since Richard Nixon was in the White House.  The national September unemployment rate is down to a historic 3.7%, and that’s creating difficulties for businesses who need additional employees for the busy holiday season.

Last week Amazon announced they are raising their minimum wage to $15 an hour, adding to the competition for workers.

Service Systems Associates, the company that hires concession and customer service positions at the Houston Zoo is holding job fairs on Monday, October 22 and Wednesday, October 24th from 10 am to 6 pm.  Ashley Noujaim says applicants should enter through Gate 8, just to the left of the main entrance at the Brown Education Center.  “We’re looking for individuals to fill a wide variety of positions at competitive season pay rates,” she says.  See a copy of their press release below.

Target, looking to hire 3,000 workers in Houston and 120,000 nationally, a 20% increase over last year, is starting their pay scale at $12 an hour.  New this year, they’ll have a chance for new hires to win a $500 Target gift card with a matching donation to a community charity.

H-E-B is looking to fill one thousand part-time and full-time positions as start considering holiday meals and decorations.

Anyone looking for extra money this holiday season, or in the market for a new job, have not been in a better position for more than two decades.
