(San Antonio, TX) -- As of Monday, residents and visitors in San Antonio have to be 21-years-old to buy tobacco products in the city.
San Antonio City Council passed the Tobacco 21 ordinance in January. Retailers will be ticketed if they're caught selling tobacco to customers under 21. But there are no consequences for an under-21 person trying to buy tobacco.
The ordinance applies not only to cigarettes, but e-cigs, hookahs and chewing tobacco as well. San Antonio is the first city in Texas to raise the minimum legal age for buying tobacco from 18 to 21.
