Food Fight! Who Invented French Fries?

An international "fast food feud" is brewing.

France and Belgium are engaged in a culture war - over French Fries

French newspaper "La Figaro" ignited the debate with an article that claims the fast food treat was not invented in Belgium.

According to local lore, fries first appeared in Belgium in the 1680's.  But French food historians say the legend is 'half-baked', because potatoes weren't introduced to the region until the 1730's.  They claim "Pomme Frites" made their first appearance in Paris in the late 18th century.

Belgium has petitioned the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization for recognition; but they may be playing "ketchup," because UNESCO is based in Paris.
