Man Found Guilty in 2016 UT Student Murder

After being on trial for two weeks, a Travis County jury in Austin has found 20-year-old Meechaeil Criner guilty of capital murder in UT freshman Haruka Weiser’s death in 2016.

The jury couldn't reach a verdict yesterday.

Criner received an automatic life sentence. He'll be eligible for parole in 40 years when he's 60.

Weiser was an 18-year-old freshman dance major from Portland, Oregon.

Criner was 17 at the time and homeless. He was seen on campus surveillance video following Weiser down a dimly lit path on the UT campus before her death.

Weiser was sexually assaulted and strangled. Her body was found near a creek.
