Layoffs Announced at HISD

The Houston Independent School District announced plans to cut back on teachers and staff to make up for a $115-million budget shortfall.

Trustees started the process in March, when the budget shortfall was estimated at $208-million.

HISD said in a statement that they would offer workshops to help affected teachers with the transition, including career marketing and resume writing tips.

Many of the staff layoffs are expected to take place in the custodial, maintenance, police, and administrative departments.

The district has not discussed the exact number of people who would be laid off, which would be determined in part by the number of educators who decide not to return for the 2018-19 academic year.
