THE COP FIDDLER

The fiddle tunes rolled over me as I entered the funeral home...and there they were at the foot of the casket, musician friends, including his grandson...playing EJ Hopkins back home.

EJ was known in Houston as that cop fiddler. A 27 year veteran of HPD, a veteran of the Korean War, he was a lifelong musician, teaching himself the fiddle… Texas style and mowing 'em down with bluegrass and swing over the decades and into the Texas Fiddlers' Hall of Fame.  Members of the HPD Honor Guard presented his widow Violet with the American and Texas flags and played Taps.  It was the solemn moments of an otherwise sweet and upbeat tone of a fiddlers’ funeral.  So very much like the man himself.  Farewell to another friend EJ Hopkins.
