Some House Republicans are pushing to add an Internet sales tax to the omnibus bill.
A similar bill passed the Senate five years ago. The House bill now has 50 co-sponsors on both sides of the aisle, just as the Supreme Court prepares to hear arguments over allowing states to collect sales tax from out-of-state companies.
It's become a major issues for states as more people make purchases online.
“We're hopeful that given all the new information the court will set or adjust the way sales tax remission should happen given the new world order of Internet sales,” says George Kelemen at the Texas Retailers Association.
Kelemen says the biggest unknown is the process of actually collecting sales tax over the Internet.
“Congress needs to pass legislation that sets up the process by which this can happen,” he says. “Some of that process is already in existance because that information is gathered for a whole host of other purposes that just doesn't include remitting sales tax.”
