After Oprah Winfrey made her fiery speech at the Golden Globes on Sunday night celebrities took to social media, encouraging her to run for President in 2020. And there are reports that she is actually considering it. Other reports say she has no intention of running.
So the question is can she do what Donald Trump did in 2016? Can she win?
SMU political scientist Cal Jillson tells KTRH he can understand why voters would turn to a celebrity just like they did in 2016, voting Donald Trump into the White House.
“Both parties became beholden to the wealthiest American; mostly fundraising and trying to put the money together for national campaigns,” Jillson explained.
But he also says it won't be as easy for Oprah or another celebrity as Trump made it seem.
“A lot of what celebrity candidates will face will be the suspicion that they don’t have the substantive background to handle the issues,” Jillson said.
Other celebrities said to be considering a 2020 run include Mark Cuban and 'The Rock,' Dwayne Johnson.
