Nazareth's Mayor Cancels Christmas Observances

The mayor of Nazareth is cancelling Christmas festivities in the sacred city because he says President Trump has taken the joy out of the holiday.

Mayor Ali Salam said he was canceling celebrations in protest of Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Nazareth is a mostly Muslim city that is revered by Christians as the childhood home of Jesus.

The city's Muslim mayor says Trump's Jerusalem decision was offensive, and that the situation in the region is now too fraught for joy.

The cancellation will come at a price to Nazareth, where the annual Christmas festivities draw tens of thousands of pilgrims to the Israeli city.
