AI could endanger humanity

Artifical intelligence (AI) take over was predicted in 1984's The Terminator and smart machines were to blame for humans’ destruction in the future.

Some scientists are now truly concerned the future of the human race could be in danger because of AI. At this year's Web Summit, Stephen Hawking said AI could be the "worst event in the history of our civilization".

“AI could develop a will of its own, a will that is in conflict with ours and which could destroy us. The rise of powerful AI will be either the best, or the worst thing ever to happen to humanity,” said Hawking.

We'll have to enhance human intelligence to make better use of artificial intelligence.

He said AI will transform every aspect of our lives.

“Success in creating effective AI could be the biggest event in the history of our civilization, or the worst. We just don’t know,” said Hawking.

Hawking said he doesn't know if AI will help or destroy us. He said he hopes the European Commission can and will take legislative steps to create a European Agency for robotics and AI that can provide technical, ethical and regulatory expertise.
