TxDOT Proposes Grand Parkway Widening

Plans are in the works to make the Grand Parkway even more grand.  TxDOT has proposed a major expansion project for the parkway (a.k.a. Texas 99) between I-10 and the Westpark Tollway.  "We are widening from four lanes to six lanes for that stretch, which is about six miles," says Deidrea George, TxDOT spokeswoman.  "And we'll also add right turn lanes at four major intersections within those limits, which is sorely needed because of the development in that area."

The plan also calls for adding a new center median for the highway and modifying several ramps.  "There are very large residential developments in that area, and so that will definitely go a long way toward making sure that people can get from point A to B quicker," says George.

As for the cost and where the funding will come from, that is still undetermined.  "The project is unfunded at this time," says George.  "If we do receive funding, we're actually not looking to start (construction) until 2022, so it is still a ways off."

With the project only in the initial planning stages, TxDOT is seeking public input and advisement on it.  To that end, the agency is hosting a public open house tonight (October 24) from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Cinco Ranch High School.  People can arrive any time during the open house and get information on the project, as well as comment on it.  "We want to hear any comments, questions or concerns," says George. "We'll be there to answer any and all questions (the public) might have."
