Forecasters predict that Tropical storm Ophelia will be the 10th consecutive storm to become a hurricane. That would tie a record set in the late 1800s.
So why has this hurricane season been this active?
Phil Klotzbach, a research scientist at Colorado State University, says “it’s a combination of the warm waters, the low sheer, and also lots of moisture in the atmosphere. It’s a perfect storm to create a very active season.”
Even though it's been a disastrous season in Texas and other states, Klotzbach says there has been somewhat of a silver lining compared to past seasons. “The number of lives lost from storms this year compared with years in the past isn’t going to stand out too significantly” says Klotzbach.
Hurricane season officially ends on November 30th .
