Recovery effort begins in earnest

The recovery effort from Harvey around Texas is beginning on the state level. Governor Abbott on Thursday named Texas A&M Chancellor John Sharp to lead the rebuilding effort.

“As families go about the process of healing, Texas must go about the rebuilding process,” Abbott stated.

But that process will take a while. Francisco Sanchez with the Harris County Office of Emergency Management tells KTRH thousands are still displaced.

“We have about 3,000 at NRG Center. The GRB has about 1,200 and 150 are in other shelters,” Sanchez stated.

Brazoria County Judge Matt Sebesta told us flood waters are receding but the bad news there keeps on coming.

“Maybe a few have been fortunate to start some reconstruction. But we have other folks who have homes under water. Yesterday may have been the day they finally got water in their house,” Sebesta said.

And there is one more local Harvey death was confirmed when the body of Jill Renick, who vanished while working at the Omni Hotel during Harvey was recovered from the basement.
