Houston family found drowned in missing van

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez says a van found in Greens Bayou was apparently carrying six members of a Houston family.

The family, including four children, drowned Sunday afternoon while trying to drive through a deep pool of water on Green River Drive.

Andrew Saldivar, a family member, said he found the van late yesterday after bayou waters began falling.

Sheriff's divers began recovering the bodies this morning.

Sammy Saldivar, who was driving, was able to escape the van, but could not rescue anyone else, family members said. He was able to exit through the driver's side window but could not open the rear door to help the children or his parents.

The two adults found in the van were identified by a family member as Bedia and Manuel Saldivar, both of whom suffered from dementia. Family said the children were Daisy Saldivar, 6; Xavier Saldivar, 8; Dominic Saldivar, 14; and Devy Saldivar, 16.
