HPD officer drowns in Harvey flood waters

Houston Police Sgt. Steve Perez died early Sunday morning on his way to work, according to officials.

Police Chief Art Acevedo said Perez left his home in heavy rain at 4:30 a.m. and drove for some two and a half hours trying to find a safe route to his downtown station. Having found no way to get there, the 34-year veteran then headed for an alternate station in Kingwood.

Yesterday, it was realized that Perez, 60, had not reported for work, and it was later determined that his patrol car got trapped in high water at Interstate 45 and the Hardy Toll Road.

Houston Police divers recovered his body.

Perez was survived by his wife, Cheryl, a son and a daughter. If you want to donate to help the family, see The 100 Club.
