Crosby plant reported at risk of fire or explosion

All residents within 1.5 miles of the Arkema chemical plant in Crosby have been told to evacuate as a "precautionary measure" because of the rising risk of an explosion.

Plant officials say rain from Tropical Storm Harvey knocked out power to the plant and swamped backup generators. Chemicals on site are stored at low temperatures, and the plant has lost refrigeration.

The plant produces organic peroxides and has had a skeleton staff on duty because of the storm. They have also been evacuated.

U.S. Rep. Ted Poe tweeted that the plant "is in danger of fire/explosion. The local area is being evacuated. Stay out of area."

The company is reportedly working with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the State of Texas to resolve the issue.
