The scoreboard read one thing, but Texans players and coaches said another.
The Texans lost the pre-season opener to Carolina 27 to 17. But there were more than a few bright spots.
It was a strong preseason debut for Texans first-round quarterback Deshaun Watson. Watson completed 15-of-25 passes for 179 yards and added a 15-yard rushing touchdown. Watson said he just tried to play within himself.
“Making sure I was doing the right thing as the quarterback; doing what the coach asked me to do and what we game planned for,” Watson said.
The rookie’s performance certainly made Coach Bill O’Brien take notice.
“I thought he did some good things. It’s a big jump, and I thought he handled it well.
The game also marked the return to the field for J.J. Watt, who missed most of last season with back surgery.
“I felt really good. I was pleased with it. I’m very lucky and very happy,” Watt said after the game.
The Texans are home to host the Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots on the 19th.
