Are we headed for a population implosion?

The world’s population continues to grow. We don’t really talk much about it, but some are very concerned.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted that he thinks the population is growing and could collapse. He's buying the argument put out there by Fred Pearce in a New Scientist piece called 'The World in 2076: The population bomb has imploded." Pearce says we aren't replacing ourselves with newborns fast enough. Texas State demographer Lloyd Potter told KTRH isn't sure about that at all.

“The population of the world will eventually slow down. Whether or not it will implode; I think that is questionable,” Potter said.

As for growth in Texas, we have gone from 23 million in 2007 to 28.7 million now.

“When we look now, a lot of our growth comes from other states and other countries; around half that growth,” Potter explained.

And if you want to compare it to 100 years ago in 1917 the Texas population was only 4.5 million people.
