History and Hot Dogs: Park Readies for the Fourth

The Fourth of July will mean old-fashioned games, hot dogs and a cobbler contest at George Ranch Historical Park in Richmond.

It’s the annual family-friendly Independence Day celebration at the Fort Bend County historical site.

July 4 activities will include:

--An 1890s Independence Day ceremony that will include a reading of the Declaration of Independence.

--A student choir performing historic patriotic songs.

--Several tableau vivants ("living pictures"), where staff members and volunteers  re-create famous Colonial paintings.

--A horse-riding show featuring the Rodeo Sweethearts.

--Clogging and square-dancing performances and lessons for the guests.

Also, a variety of historic games, including Blindman’s Bluff, a watermelon seed spitting contest, sack races, tug-of-war, croquet, baseball and marbles, will be ongoing throughout the park.

Also, everyone is invited to participate in the park’s free annual cobbler-eating contest at 1:30 p.m. in the yard of the 1930s George Ranch Home.

All activities are included with general admission.

At 12:30 p.m., guests with separate-purchase lunch reservations – not included with general admission -- will have an Independence Day hot dog feast under 200-year-old oak trees in the yard of the 1930s George Ranch Home.
