Deputy in Denny’s Fight Placed on Leave

Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Chauna Thompson, who was involved in a deadly brawl outside a Denny’s in Sheldon last week, has been placed on administrative leave.

Thompson and her husband Terry were indicted on murder charges by a grand jury Thursday, in the death of 24-year old John Hernandez.  Mr. Thompson reportedly confronted Hernandez, who was urinating in the parking lot.  The couple reportedly subdued Hernandez, claiming they acted in self-defense.

Hernandez was taken to the hospital, where he died three days later.  The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide.

An internal investigation into Deputy Thompson’s actions will also focus on the actions of eight fellow deputies who responded to the scene.  An attorney for the Hernandez family says mistakes were made on the night of the confrontation.  He also characterized the investigation as “shoddy.”
