Your Taxes are (Probably) Late, but it’s OK

Hundreds of Houston taxpayers likely don't know they're breaking federal law. All of your taxes for 2016 were actually due no later than January 15th, even though April 18th is what we call "Tax Day."

Houston tax expert Joe Mastriano says nearly everybody gets an exemption and can pay the balance now.

“Whether it's through an estimated tax payment or a W-2, your taxes are due uniformly during the year,” Mastriano says. “The fourth quarter's estimate is due January 15th.”

Most get the exemption.

“If you have enough withholding to cover it, then great,” he says. “You'll get a refund.”

The IRS reports eight out of 10 American taxpayers will be getting a refund this year.
